I am studying for a BA degree in English? Does this qualify me to tutor? Say for GCSEs or A' Levels?

I'm 27 and I am half way through the second year and hope to go straight into a PGCE afterwards with the hope of becoming a teacher.

It does qualify you to tutor. You will have to convince your clients that your good enough though. At the end of the day if someone’s paying you privately to do something and your not delivering the goods then you’re going to get the sack. It may also qualify you to teach post 16 in a college. But to teach 5-16 in a school you either need a subject degree and PGCE or a 4 year B Ed degree.

If you want to become an English teacher why not consider teaching in Spain? We really are in need of native English teachers…the level of English is very low, and it´s a shame.

You don’t need to have any qualifications to be a tutor. Anyone can tutor anyone. however, if you are going to tutor students for an examination, it might be better if you know the examination material and syllabus. If I was going to hire a tutor i would try to get one that is a qualified/experienced teacher of the subject. If you have no experience of the examination you won’t know what the students need to do in order to achieve the results they need. I reckon that tutoring for Sats etc would be easier to do if you have no teaching or examining experience. If you are looking for extra money, some exam boards will let you mark papers even if you aren’t a teacher. It might be worth looking into.

By the way, if you want to do a PGCE after university, try to get some experience in a school or educational environment. I found it was easier to get an interview for my PGCE after I did some work experience. You could contact a school and ask them if you could come in for a few days to observe teachers or work with them in some way. I think it would really help your application and you would know what you were getting into.

    No, you are not qualified.
You need to be armed with some pedagogy to be able to tutor. You may quickly take a part time distant learning course on it and seek to practice. That’s it!!!

Tutoring is not regulated, beyond the tax laws. You can do it now if you want.

Terms like TEACHER, PROFESSOR, SCHOOL are regulated.
