Home schooled, need help!?

I'm a thirteen-year-old female home schooled girl. I'm a writer and an artist. Going onto 8th grade.
Although, my mother finally decided to put me into school (I have to take a test to get in). I hardly studied throughout my life, we are poor and can't afford much. I SUCK with math. I feel very depressed because I think I won't make it into the school or if I do (it'd be a miracle) I'd probably just fail and have to repeat. Or I'll be kicked out. I'm afraid to be laughed and made fun of because I'd probably get the lowest grades.
I'm going to start going in a week. I'm very afraid. And nervous and depressed. I really can't stand it.
I want to study hard, but don't know where to start and don't know where to find the motivation and confidence. I just keep thinking, "Will I make it? I probably won't…" and stop. My parents are never home and they are getting a divorce soon. So they can't help me. My older siblings all moved away. And my younger sister (12) is going to the same school as I am. And she's the same as me. We're both very scared and nervous. How and what do I do?
Right now, we can't think of anything we can do. We're going crazy over this.

I'm afraid I'll make no friends because of my lack of education.

My parents can't afford a tutor. Please help!

im a 14 year old going to freshmen year
    calm down
ive been thru middle school and if you have bad grades no one is going to make fun of you this year we cheered for a friend who got an f its okay and if you dont make it youll get into another school right? :] and youre BOUND to get friends guaranteed. no doubt about it. your lack of education means nothing the home schooling for most of your life would make you talked about
my friend went into home schooling after the 7th grade haha its okay i swear
you should already have the motivation and confidence right there. you said you dont think youll have friends due to lack of education right? then theres your motivation. study harder for a better education and so that you can fit in a little better :] hope this helps good luck in school

your mom sucks the least she could have done is teach you these things if she refuses to send u to public school (which is free and they help ppl if they cant keep up or cant afford supplies)
    but there is hope
many great people were never formally educated and only taught themselves.
    books!! get lots of books
books at libraries are free and they have many textbooks and books on every topic that many classes use. ask the librarian what books people your age could use to become more academic. she will have many ideas i’m sure and she will know what people at school are reading.
they also have workbooks at stores that arent that expensive. get a few math books of your own for a few bucks
i bet your mom’s bf can help you study math. ask him to teach you the basics.
when your mom says it will humiliate you to go to grade one tell her you are humiliated already bc u dont know what people know from just going to elementary school

Asking for help is definitely the first step. :)

There are two complete maths curriculums online. I haven’t looked through them properly yet, so I don’t know how easy it would be to self teach. Try starting with year seven, and if that is too tricky, go back.

Motivation is not hard to find. In fact, I can find it in your post:

"I’m afraid." You have said that enough times in your post to demonstrate that fear of failure is your motivation. You obviously aren’t an idiot, so you are capable of learning! Fear does make it hard to get started though, I understand. What I tell myself when I feel like this, is learning one thing makes me 100% better at it than I was before I learned it. 100% is a big number and good for morale ;)

If you and your sister work together, I’ll be you can figure it out. Anyone can self educate if they really want to and it sounds like you really want to. If you have further troubles, jump back online to ask. There’s here, or the Self Education board on the Well Trained Mind forum.

So sorry you have to go thru this. You mother should have provided education for you and humiliating her is a very selfish thing for her to say to her child, so don’t feel that it is your fault. You can get hand-me-down curriculum from your local homeschool groups, you can educate yourself and some times get tutoring for free at your local library. 100 years ago people educated themselves with whatever books were available and it seems that is what you need to do. Develop some self-discipline, help your sister too (be your own cheering section :-) , and get to the library, ask your teachers at the new school if they can give you short tutor sessions before or after school to help you catch up, and look for tutor and practice websites online to help along. You type very well, so your english grammar should be up to par. Don’t worry too much about kids making fun of you, that is not very likely, an even if they do, your future and education are much more important. Stay strong and good luck!

You;ll do fine. I homeschooled all my kids til high school and I have to admit, there were holes where I could have prepared them better. But they did great!! All were honor students. They kept saying they didn;t understand how everyone didn’t get good grades, because all you need to do is do the work asked.

They were very afraid they would do well either, and that everyone would know more than them. But they found out that they were learning rght along with everyone else. Some caught on quicker, so they asked those people for help. Getting involved in sports and clubs is also helpful in making friends without having to be "smart"!! Three are in college now and one graduates in 2 years.

You will do fine if you set your mind to it. Go for it!! You have nothing to lose and can be who YOU want to be…the choice is up to you :o )

Wow so your mother says it will humiliate her if you start from grade one yet she never taught you anything? She should be embarrassed.
Ok so first of all you said you have to take a test but you’re starting in a week? So I’m assuming you passed the test if you’re attending..
On your first day I recommend just being friendly to people, not overly confident or outgoing but friendly and just chat to people sitting around you and introduce yourself and stuff. This will make you some friends and be helpful. You should also join a club or team or something if your school has them so you can make more friends.
People wouldn’t make fun of you or not want to be your friend because of your grades… they’re personal so keep them to yourself. If you have good teachers they can probably help you catch up and stuff. If you study hard and focus on your schoolwork you can do well and by the time you get to high school you’ll be good to go!
Don’t be scared and nervous because those feelings can’t help you so keep your head up! So yeah basically be friendly and kind and stuff and you will make friends (your lack of education will have nothing to do with making friends!). And study hard so you’ll catch up. Good luck!

    Hey

First of all, I think you should not get disheartened. It’s okay to be nervous, it’s okay to be weak at a subject, and it’s okay to be scared of joining school – It is not an easy transition, you just need to hang in there and work a little hard, and it’ll be great.

If you want a great math refresher course, which is guaranteed to reinforce math concepts and build your core skills, give you a personalized, state mapped, structured curriculum, loads of practice, worksheets with hints and video lessons, tests, etc., and get you ready for school, try out our website – http://www.tenmarks.com/. Our program adapts to your needs, and allows you to work at your own pace and time, without pressure – master each concept before you go to the next, and do it all on your own – build skills, yet never wait for a class or tutor. Get help just as you need it, and keep your parents involved in the process.

Our program is designed to increase students’ confidence, give them an edge in math, and help them succeed, plus, it’s completely personalized per student. And it’s a fraction of the cost of tutoring – We even have a back to school special with a great discounted price, which could work for you. And if you’re going into grade 8, you could choose our Step Up to Grade 8 program. If it doesn’t suit your specific needs, take an assessment and we’ll make you your own curriculum.

And remember – you’ll be able to do it. Be great at math. Be educated. And be successful. You may be struggling now, but you can’t let that hurt your confidence – There is no such thing as lack of knowledge. Just get at it, work some more, and prove it to yourself!

    Hope this helps!
